The Mexican coast: a ghostly grimace, delicate and demonic, begins to give an account of escape to another country. Andrea Bussmann shows those who breathe life into this place. She observes men and animals, listens to stories about wildness and untameability. On the border between solid earth and the opaque depths of the sea, her film tells of physical infiltrations, spiritual grey zones and the politics of seeing. Who looks and who speaks? Who records and how can the camera apparatus actually meet living beings? The Canadian anthropologist plays with the possibilities, constraints and blind spots of ethnographic and documentary film. Groping in the dark becomes the modus of an exploration of cinema as a place where souls gather.
