Debate

We discuss the horror of capitalism, the surreality of politics, and masking in both playful and serious cases. We ask about the limits of the bearable and the unambiguity of certain signs, faces and images, especially in activist cinema.

Guests include: Şirin Fulya Erensoy, Omer Fast, Massimo Perinelli, Riar Rizaldi

NOTES FROM GOG MAGOG

D: Riar Rizaldi, DOP: Boram Momo Lee, Adythia Utama, INA 2022, 19 min., English, Indonesian, Korean Original with English Subtitles – GP

A worker is buried under a container in an accident at a freight harbour. A woman wanders through an office building at night and is haunted by ghosts – as a gateway to hell opens up. Riar Rizaldi uses the everyday reality of workers in South Korea and Indonesia to create a horror vision of international capitalism. Documentary realism meets hypnotic, maelstrom-like animation, facts meet fiction, narratives meet nightmares. In doing so, he pushes himself to the limits of what is bearable, deconstructing images into their constituent parts and allowing time, space and bodies to continue to dissolve away.

ABENDLAND

D: Omer Fast, C: Stephanie Amarell, Susanne Bredehöft, Berna Kilicli, Benedikt Laumann, Ivy Lißack, Sebastian Schneider, Sebastian Schulze, Janina Stopper, Marie Tragousti, Milton Welsh, Amon Wendel, DOP: Lukas Strebel, GER 2024, 115 min., German Original with English Subtitles – WP

Due to the failings of the German state, many people live outside society in a forest: Visibly inspired by the climate activists who have regularly occupied the Hambach Forest since 2012 and shed their civic identity as part of their activism, video artist Omer Fast’s (CONTINUITY, REMAINDER) third long feature film delves deep into surreal scapes and creates an ambiguous masquerade between riddle and parabel that questions the expectations of political cinema.
