PISTOLERAS

D: Natalia del Mar Kašik, C: Ronja Klug, AUT 2023, 2 min., without dialogue – GP

Naked skin can be seen where the Colt hung loosely around the hips. Erotically supercharged and self-sufficient, the cowgirl moves through the landscape – musically referencing ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, the western is strangely revived, and the motif of the duel becomes a dance with the self. The awakening of the cowgirl in the mirror stage – the fracturing is obvious, in the image and in the imagination. As in HORSE GIRL, Natalia del Mar Kašik is interested in the transformation of gestures and motifs, and in playing with the other person. Here, the mirror and the split screen reassemble the images and motifs against a background of grass moving rhythmically in the wind.

NOCTURNO PARA UMA FLORESTA (NOCTURNE FOR A FOREST)

D: Catarina Vasconcelos, C: José Aguiar, Paula Guedes, Mariana Veloso, DOP: Paulo Menezes, POR 2023, 16 min., Portuguese Original with English Subtitles – GP

Magnificently arranged still lifes meet ancient choral songs and a playful piano piece by Purcell. The nature-loving Carmelites, who found a monastery in the forests of central Portugal, are sent a plaque with an unequivocal message by the depressive and misogynistic Pope Gregory XV: Women must stay outside! However, within the walls of the convent house hangs the indecent painting Sagrada Familia, in which the infant Jesus can be seen near Mary’s milk-oozing nipple. Bathed in colorful Giallo light, the plants of the forest are animated by the spirits of deceased women, who will hold judgment over it. Will they condemn—or even cancel—the painter Josefa de Óbidos? After all, the lecherous monks have certainly not gathered in front of the painting just to pray, and above all, it is important to assess all of this in the wake of #MeToo.

WIKIRIDERS

D, C, DOP: Clara Winter, Miiel Ferráez, MEX/GER 2024, 60 min., German, Englisch, Spanisch Original with English Subtitles – WP

Westerns are so yesterday! Clara Winter, Miiel Ferráez and Megan Marsh’s debut feature film WIKIRIDERS is a self-assured rebellion against no-frills entertainment cinema in the form of an ironic road movie: their alter egos cross Texas and Mexico in search of the legacy of colonialism. This appears to them in the guise of an influential aristocratic family—far more alive than they would like! As it turns out, the “Flussmartins” have been pulling the strings behind the scenes of Mexican politics and society for around 200 years. The outlaw outfit discusses the solution to the legacy of history on their route: Investigation, improvisation, agitation?!
