Debate Formats
# STEILVORLAGE
[1] a pass in a soccer game near the goal, which can lead to a goal through a slight change of direction
[2] figurative: a keyword that enables someone to unlock a desired opportunity
Films inspire debate; they provide an invitation, in some cases a provocation. In this format, people from different fields, disciplines and/or arts come together to discuss the evening’s films and the points of connection between them.
# TUNNELBLICK
[1] Ophthalmology: Narrowing of the field of vision
[2] Psychology: narrowing of the field of vision by overstraining the brain
[3] figurative: limited view that includes the exclusion of partial areas
Whether it’s screenwriting, sound design, or costumes, this format brings together people who share a common role in the filmmaking process, who approach a selection of films from the perspective of their specific craft in order that we might see them anew. In 2025, our focus is on editing.
# WUNSCHDENKEN
[1] a hopeful idea of some current or future state of things, which is usually uncritical and ignores or distorts the facts of a situation; thinking based on unrealistic assumptions and ideas that correspond only to one’s own wishes.
Director’s Choice: in this format, our invited filmmakers are asked to choose someone with whom they would like to discuss their own films. Whether it’s a long-time companion, an expert or an intellectual crush, Critics’ Week makes it possible.
# HALBWISSEN
[1] pejorative: superficial knowledge, a lack of in-depth knowledge
In this format, the moderator knows nothing about either the evening’s films or the people on the podium – but is curious about both. A debate that challenges the invited guests to give particularly precise descriptions of the films and their own attitudes.
# RUDELKRITIK
Rudel: [1] the (temporary) association of a number of wild mammals belonging to certain species (especially chamois, deer, wild boar, wolves), smaller than a herd
Film critics in a pack: this format brings together voices from international film critics to take a closer look at the evening’s films and engage with the audience’s critiques.
# REAKTIONSZEIT
[1] general: the time required to react or respond to something
[2] Physiology: the time that elapses between perceiving and reacting to a stimulus
Patience is key: a discussion between our guests about the evening’s film program, in which the filmmakers present are initially allowed only to listen. Later, they will have the opportunity to respond.
