MAGIC SKIN (MAGIKÓ DÉRMA)
D: Konstantinos Samaras, Cast: Haris Fragoulis, Anthi Efstratiadou, Andreas Kontopoulos, Jenny Theona, Giannis Bezos, DP: Thodoris Mihopoulos, GR 2018, 90 min., Greek OV w/ English subs – IP
A magical piece of skin that can make all wishes come true. But what would be one’s greatest wish? To be turned into a cat? In his feature debut, the former film critic Konstantinos Samaras adapts Balzac and takes a writer on a frantic journey across the landscape of his soul. He wants nothing more than to step out of himself. “We have to do something to exist,” says one of his companions. Unrestrained speech, hurried walking, fidgeting and screaming – these become rituals of self-assurance and self-assertion in a filmic world that changes its characters quickly, and sometimes overruns them, swiftly discards them, and reinterprets their make-up again and again. A film that confidently confronts the Greek Weird Wave with its own style and explores cinema as an anarchic free zone.

Debate: DELIGHT & DELUSION
To lose one’s head from too much reflection, too many quotations, too much dissent. Cinema as a space for contrasts, the invoking of naivety, traditional role models and the immortal love for all that is unstable.
Guests: Antonin Peretjatko (film director, “La Fille du 14 juillet”, “La Loi de la jungle”), Susanne Kennedy (theatre director, most recently at the Volksbühne Berlin with “Coming Society”), and Devika Girish (film critic) // in the presence of director Kostas Samaras
Moderated by Giona Nazzaro (Venice International Film Critics’ Week)
Re-Run: Friday, 15th Februar 2019 – 12.15 pm
