Friday Feb 6
8:30 PM

ON THE JOB
D: Erik Matti, C: Piolo Pascual, Gerald Anderson, Joel Torre, Joey Marquez, PH 2013, 121 min., 35mm on DCP, Tagalog OwES

After almost 20 works, only a few international occasions have shed light on the fine craft of Erik Matti, while the language of genre remains one of the most accessible in cinema. An evening that seeks to illuminate the potentials of established forms.

Debate
Genre – rules of genre cinema and its persistent fascination. About the chances and risks of popular film forms.

“Genre” is a term of consent resulting from dialogues: film historical, aesthetical, industrial, cultural. Genre addresses and includes our cinematic experience. As a cinematic “currency” it offers us a sense of familiarity within recurring lines of tradition. How can established patterns still be substantial? Does familiarity foster passivity and pragmatism? How can genre fiction be subversive and original, aesthetically as well as in its social position? How can we talk and write about genre?
