WAITING FOR APRIL
D: Olivier Godin, C: Michel Faubert, Johanna Nutter, Étienne Pilon, Tatiana Zinga Botao, DOP: Renaud Després-Larose, CAN 2018, 78 min., French OwEs – WP
From the Québécois underground comes French-Canadian Olivier Godin to joyfully and radically do away with cinematic conventions. Making use of the most modest of means, Godin interrogates the absurd through a mixture of music, lyricism and situational comedy.
MRS. HYDE (MADAME HYDE)
D: Serge Bozon, C: Isabelle Huppert, Romain Duris, José Garcia, Adda Sedani, DOP: Céline Bozon, FRA/BEL 2017, 95 min., French OwEs
A demonically bitter Isabelle Huppert plays the part of frustrated teacher Mrs. Géquil. After 35 hapless years in the profession, a physics experiment transforms her into the supernatural being Mrs. Hyde, who proceeds to wreak havoc on the neoliberal school with caustic humor.
After the screening
Debate: HUMOR AND FRAGILITY
Humor interrupts routines, reveals sensibilities and creates ruptures. But it also is fragile, and never sure of its means. How can comedies benefit from this?
